Poulsbo (Wash.) – Manfred Tempelmayr, President of Sound Publishing, has announced his retirement effective May 31, 2010. Tempelmayr, who has been President since 2000, will leave his position at the end of this month and will stay on for two years in a consulting capacity with Sound Publishing parent company, Black Press.
Tempelmayr has worked for Black Press for over 25 years and prior to his appointment to Sound Publishing was Vice-President for the Black Press Vancouver Island community newspapers responsible for newspaper and press operations north of Victoria. He joined Black Press in the early 1980’s when he sold his own newspaper, the Cowichan News to Island Publishers Ltd., a Black Press subsidiary at the time.
Tempelmayr has been the driving force behind the growth of Sound Publishing’s expansion in the greater Seattle market place. Key acquisitions in the past four years include the King County Journal and its community newspapers, the Little Nickel operations, Enumclaw Courier Herald, Bonney Lake Courier Herald, the Marysville Globe, Arlington Times and the Wenatchee and Bellingham Business Journals.
All of these acquisitions were consolidated into Sound operations under Manfred’s stewardship during both a period of severe recession and vast secular change affecting newspaper publishing operations in North America.
Manfred’s steady hand of leadership for Sound Publishing has ensured Sound is poised for a rebound as the economy gradually improves in the Western Washington marketplace in 2010-2011. “The past few years have been difficult for all newspaper companies and Manfred’s leadership from a business perspective has been greatly appreciated by Black Press,” said Chief Operating Officer, Rick O’Connor. “We are pleased he will continue to work with us in a consulting capacity for the next two years as we further transition our company.”
Manfred and his wife, Pam, plan on keeping their home in Poulsbo, and splitting their time between their vacation home on Gabriola Island near Vancouver Island and Poulsbo.
An announcement will be made shortly regarding a succession plan for Tempelmayr’s position.
