Aviation Machinist Mate 3rd Class Joseph Lambertz wasn’t always an excellent example of what a Petty Officer in the Navy should be. The obstacles he has overcome make him a great example of how hard work and dedication can make anyone succeed in the Navy.
Lambertz joined Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129 in January 2006, and like most “booters” was eager to learn everything. He worked hard in the phase shop, attained Collateral Duty Inspector (CDI) for Airframes work center 120 and was frocked to 3rd Class.
A few days later, he came to work intoxicated and got busted down to Airman Apprentice. “I was young and made a dumb choice but I didn’t want that decision to define me so I just kept going,” said Lambertz. He continued to work hard to prove himself and quickly earned his “turn” qualification.

It’s when a mishap just about happened, but it didn’t. Imagine with me for a while…. You drive in to work on a cold January day. You park in your usual spot and step out of your vehicle. You slip on the frost on the pavement and you lose your balance. You quickly grab the car handle and you don’t fall. You also do not sustain any injury due to the jerking motion of your body in your frantic effort to regain your footing. You don’t have any pain or discomfort from the event. This was a near miss.
What benefits are there to reporting a Near Miss?
So, you didn’t fall and you don’t have any pain or discomfort of any kind from the little slipping event. You think nothing of it and you go about your day without saying anything to anyone about it. You think it’s not a big deal and besides, if you told our boss, you’d be embarrassed. So, why is the safety office teaching you that Near Misses are important and you need to report it to your supervisor?

Is it a bad thing for married couples to argue? If husband and wife disagree about parenting, finances, about how to handle the in-laws — is this a recipe for marital disaster? Not necessarily. Happy couples argue, disagree, and have conflict about many issues.
What distinguishes successful couples from unhappy ones is their ability to manage conflict well. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month.
One powerful way to prevent domestic violence is to focus on building strong marriages and developing skills to handle disagreements well. Successful couples know how to maintain respect, show understanding and follow guidelines to manage conflict – to be the boss of the conflict - versus allowing conflict to be the Boss of them. They know how to fight fair.
An important first step to manage conflict well is accepting that disagreements happen in the best of marriages. Each individual is wonderfully unique, with a different perspective and point of view.
